Strandverket Winter Exhibition – Valand Revisited

26 November, 2016 - 15 January, 2017

Through the annual Winter Exhibition Strandverket makes an inventory of the art scene in West Sweden. This year we've asked artist/sculptor Pål Svensson to return to Valand School of Fine Arts, where he himself was a student 1979-1984. His assignment was to pick out works of 17 artists that went to the very same school from the 80-ies and onward.

Eva Hild / Entity

11 June, 2016 - 25 September, 2016

In the fairy tale “Alice in Wonderland”, English author Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) describes seven-year-old Alice falling into a rabbit hole many kilometres deep. The same breath-taking feeling that Alice of the fairy tale must have felt can be experienced when seeing Eva Hild’s magical sculptures with their seemingly endless depths, entry points and variations.

Photography beside itself – Lars Tunbjörk 1956-2015

11 June, 2016 - 25 September, 2016

Few people have the privilege to influence the style of the global photography scene. However, Lars Tunbjörk belonged to the small group of photographers who with their gaze was able to make us see the world through different eyes. Shooting like Tunbjörk became a concept that photographers during the 1990s had to relate to. Lars Tunbjörk saw what everyone else also saw but were unable to capture through photography.

Joakim Eskildsen / A world I can believe in

19 March, 2016 - 29 May, 2016

In the early 1930’s, British filmmaker John Grierson coined the term ”documentary” in order to describe the emerging genre of photography documenting reality. Since then, it has been a source of debate for photographers as well as scholars.

The photographer Joakim Eskildsen, born 1971 in Copenhagen, could be described as a documentary photographer, yet at the same time as a humanistic photographer. A pictorial poet who in ”A World I Can Believe In” describes ”reality” as he sees it in three series: Nordtegn, The Roma Journeys and Home Works. Strandverket regards Joakim Eskildsen, with his deeply human style of photography, as a worthy successor of the world-class photographers we have displayed since opening in 2012: Aron Jonason, Håkan Ludwigson, Christer Strömholm, Lennart Nilsson and Maria Miesenberger.

Ann Edholm meets Hilma af Klint

19 March, 2016 - 29 May, 2016

Hilma af Klint – A Pioneer of Abstraction was the title of a major exhibition of the Swedish painter Hilma af Klint’s oeuvre that was curated by Stockholm’s museum of modern art, Moderna Museet in 2013. When the exhibition’s highly successful tour of Europe ended at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in the Norwegian capital it had attracted more than a million visitors. It is a great honour for Strandverket, together with London’s Serpentine Gallery, to be able to show parts of the exhibition in the spring of 2016. We have chosen to let Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) meet one of the most respected artists of our own time, the Swedish painter Ann Edholm, born in 1953, in an exhibition that questions the very idea of what abstract painting actually is – and what is meant by figurative art.

The Rise and Fall of Ingrid Bergman. And Rise.

6 June, 2015 - 27 September, 2015

This summer marks 100 years since actress Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm on August 29, 1915. Her incredible movie career has ensured that Ingrid Bergman, with her three Oscars for the films ”Gaslight”, ”Anastasia” and ”Murder on the Orient Express”, is ranked one of the five foremost actresses of all times – alongside Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo.

This exhibition focuses on the three phases of her career. The first stage tells the story about Ingrid Bergman’s childhood and the fact that young Ingrid was orphaned as a 12-year-old, when her father died. Ingrid had already lost her mother at two years of age. The first stage of the exhibition then follows her early film career in Sweden, her wedding to her first husband, Petter Aron Lindström, and Ingrid Bergman’s big Hollywood breakthrough with successful movies such as ”Intermezzo” (1939), ”Casablanca” (1942) ”Gaslight” (1944), ”Notorious” (1946) and ”Joan of Arc” (1948).

Denies Grünstein / In Transit

6 June, 2015 - 27 September, 2015

Photo-based artist Denise Grünstein, born in Helsinki in 1950 and residing in Stockholm, is the first mother of contemporary Swedish photography. Like no other female photographer, she has explored the photographic medium’s possibilities and limitations since the start of the 1980s – when she was recognised in the group exhibition ”Bländande bilder” (Dazzling Images) at Fotografiska museet (Photographic Museum). In the exhibition”In Transit”, we experience Grünstein’s entire oeuvre – from an early portrait of Anita Ekberg (1994) to the just-released image suite 1866 – which has been shown at Konstakademin in Stockholm during Spring and whose title refers to the year that Nationalmuseum was opened.

Hertha Hillfon / The Bowl – My Mantra!

29 March, 2015 - 24 May, 2015

The idea of an exhibition with and by Hertha Hillfon came to me as early as 2008, when I saw Memories’ wind – Hertha Hillfon’s memorable exhibition at Prince Eugen’s estate Waldemarsudde.

The critically acclaimed exhibition was a powerful manifestation of a female artistry about to fall into oblivion. When I became artistic director of the newly established Strandverket Art Gallery (2012), an exhibition with Hertha Hillfon was high on my wish list.

When Hertha Hillfon celebrated her 92nd birthday (!) I tried to woo her with an offer too good to refuse. But the proud and headstrong Hertha Hillfon said kindly, but firmly that there would be no exhibition!

She did not want to live in her studio without being surrounded by her artwork. And she told me: – A Chinese museum in Beijing has been to my studio four times to offer to hold an exhibition. And I’ve replied that if the Chinese want to see my art, they will have to come to my studio in Mälarhöjden.

That was Hertha Hillfon’s diplomatic reply to the distant guests. For me, my day-long visit to Hertha Hillfon had a different turn; before the day was over she came up with a compromise: – Strandverket shall have a magnificent exhibition, but I shall die first!

Karin Broos / Minnesmärken

23 June, 2014 - 28 September, 2014

A new exhibition by Karin Broos is an extraordinary artistic event. It is therefore a great honour for Strandverket to present Karin Broos' exhibition Minnesmärken. It is based on more than 40 new paintings that comprehensibly cover her entire oeuvre of photorealistic painting with motifs drawn from her own life experience.

Earlier in her career, many motifs dealt with daughters Sara, Sissela and Stella, but now the grandchildren appear in her paintings too. And while earlier pictorial stories played out around the home in Östra Ämtervik by lake Fryken in fairy tale-like Värmland, Karin Broos has now broadened the field to the wooden town of Jurmala in Latvia as well as international metropolitan cities such as Berlin and Istanbul. The exhibition also features a series of paintings in a hospital setting, motifs that have come about during the artist's own hospital sojourns while dealing with malignant eye problems.

Lars Lerin / Lars Lerin’s World

6 April, 2014 - 8 June, 2014

Lars Lerin is considered one of Scandinavia’s leading living watercolour artists. The exhibition Lars Lerin’s World is an attempt to, for the first time, circle Lars Lerin’s entire artistry.

In addition to his iconic watercolours, we will meet Lerin, the master photographer. The exhibition displays about 70 colour photographs, taken mainly during his travels in Brazil. The subjects are often abandoned dogs and cats caught in varying circumstances. It is easy to interpret these photographic studies as a kind of symbolic self-portrait that mirrors the artist’s dramatic life.

21 June, 2013 - 29 September, 2013

Christer Strömholm (1918-2002) was one of the most important Swedish photographers of our time. He spent most of his life in Sweden but early on made France his second home. He founded the legendary photography college Fotoskolan in Stockholm in 1962 and inspired an entire generation of Swedish photographers.

He is most famous for his depiction of transsexuals in the Paris of the 1960s, resulting in his book Vännerna från Place Blanche (The Friends from Place Blanche). His photographs from travels in Japan, Spain and the United States have also won wide acclaim and are represented in several of the world’s leading museums.

Christer Strömholm was appointed professor of photography by the Swedish government and was honoured with the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 1997.

Tony Cragg / Material Is The Message

21 June, 2013 - 29 September, 2013

Tony Cragg is considered one of contemporary art’s most important sculptors. Since his breakthrough in the early 1980s, his works have been exhibited in most well-regarded museums and galleries in the world. Understanding the material - whether natural or synthetic - is central to Tony Cragg's artistry - in his hands it becomes forms and images, expressions that grow from the material, or that already exist in nature, or in items created by us humans.

Håkan Ludwigson / Balls & Balldust

15 August, 2012

The dense red dust lingers in the air and forces its way in everywhere. It can be 40°C during the day and below zero at night. You’re 17 years old and it’s your first time working away from home, or you’re 50 and it’s the only life you’ve ever known. You sleep in a swag on the ground for long periods of time. Monotonous food, in the saddle 12 hours a day. As a stockman you gather thousands of animals. Separating and branding them. Castrating young bulls. As a bull catcher you chase the largest and most stubborn bulls in a brutal race. The Australian outback is hard on man and animal alike.
